Arsenal do Alfeite
Arsenal do Alfeite, SA is a Portuguese naval shipyard located in Almada, near Lisbon, primarily dedicated to the maintenance, repair, and modernization of naval vessels. It serves as a strategic asset for the Portuguese Navy and provides specialized services for both national and international clients.
Arsenal do Alfeite, SA is located within the Alfeite Naval Base, a secure military facility, on the southern bank of the tejo River, close to Lisbon. This secure positioning enables it to offer comprehensive support to the Portuguese Navy and other clients under stringent safety protocols. The shipyard encompasses extensive infrastructure, including dry dock, slipways, and specialized workshops.
Arsenal do Alfeite, SA is thus a pivotal hub for naval engineering and repair in Portugal, combining traditional shipyard capabilities with modern technological advancements.
Advanced security
Sabotage, terrorist attacks, drug trafficking, and smuggling are a few security challenges that ports face. Current methods for inspecting and monitoring are inefficient, time-consuming, and dangerous and there is limited interoperability in information exchange among coast guards and port administrations. The COLOSSUS platform will provide an integrated perimeter surveillance service that deploys a layered security approach across maritime and onshore environments.
Using autonomous Unmanned Surface Vessels (UOPVs), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs), the system will maintain continuous monitoring of critical infrastructure. These autonomous units will patrol predefined zones, delivering real-time visual feeds and sensor data to identify and analyse potential security threats. This multi-domain surveillance service will enhance early detection of unauthorised activities and support robust port protection.
Key outcomes
Fewer port perimeter security operational expenditures
Increase in real-time detection accuracy
Reduction in response time for security threats
Efficient and safe operations
Navigating and maintaining precision in dynamic conditions around docks, avoiding collisions and ensuring safe manoeuvring in confined spaces are a few cases where a coordinated, optimal vessel positioning is required to improve operational efficiency and reduce human error.
The COLOSSUS platform will deliver an advanced operational support service to improve the safety and efficiency of docking and undocking operations. By coordinating UOPVs, UAVs, and UGVs, the system will provide real-time situational awareness, positioning assistance, and continuous monitoring during vessel manoeuvres. This multi-vehicle interoperability will reduce human error, optimise vessel alignment, and enhance overall operational performance. In addition, COLOSSUS will generate and maintain a comprehensive digital archive of historical docking data collected by the autonomous systems. This archive will support future operations, accelerate the digital transformation of port procedures, and preserve critical operational expertise over time.
Key outcomes
Fewer maintenance operational expenditures
Reduction in infrastructure-related downtime
Predictive maintenance
Monitoring continuous floor movement and sediment accumulation that impacts docking zones and implementing real-time infrastructure condition assessment in harsh marine environments are a few of the key maintenance needs to increase the resilience of critical infrastructures.
COLOSSUS will offer a predictive maintenance service designed to strengthen infrastructure resilience and ensure long-term operational continuity. Through dynamic bathymetry monitoring, the platform will track seabed changes—such as sand shifts or floor movement—that may affect docking safety or structural stability. Sensor-equipped autonomous systems will continuously assess the condition of dry docks, floating docks, inclined planes, mooring quays, and docking bridges. This service will integrate real-time monitoring with 3D reconstruction models and AI-driven decision support tools, enabling early detection of structural risks and supporting efficient, data-driven maintenance planning.
Key outcomes
Fewer maintenance operational expenditures
Reduction in infrastructure-related downtime
